Here's a couple of shots of 34064 near to the summit at Milepost 31. The first is on 1st June 1963 and she's on a down Bournemouth relief. A very hot day when we had cycled from home in Shirley, near Croydon. The second clearly shows the Giesel ejector as 34064 clears the summit with the 1054 Waterloo to Swanage on Saturday 4th August 1962.

Many thought that this loco was as good as a Merchant but I am not so sure. I had some good runs with it but not much above good light pacific standard.

Hi all

This question stems in part from a question posed on another forum. Someone asked whether or not 35019 French Lines CGT had black nameplates because he'd been told by an ex driver that the loco always had black nameplates and therefore the 4mm scale nameplates he'd bought were incorrect. I've seen video footage of a rebuilt 35019 with red plates but can anyone confirm that 35019 ran with black ones? particularly before rebuilding?

I have seen video footage of 34028 Eddystone with ...

Unfortunately I couldn't make the MHR because I have a really bad cold (All down my Sineses) So feeling pretty rough with it.

I've seen some footage this evening on You-Tube with Tornado and she slipped numerous times over the MHR gala? From what I've been told these were crews that normally crew her??? I've seen other footage on the mainline and she slips a fair bit too. Is this lack of knowledge of the loco; conditions? (If so are the Sanders not being used?)

She came under the first over bridge out of Alton making a wonderful noise last Saturday. Very obvious fast acceleration with six on before the crew had to ease back because of the overall speed limit!

But far, far better was the climb away from a slack a mile or two from Cheltenham race ...

Apparently this fab loco is due to go in for overhaul (Being the MHR 'Flagship loco') next year. She will apparently need a new firebox from what I understand? And is apparently going in either next year or early 2011?

I've heard great things about this loco from the 60's.. What was her best run?

Having struck lucky with a photo, here is the final send off to 35007 at Nine Elms on the evening of 8th July 1967 with a motley crew aboard!

Sorry the first posting about this superb machine is at the end but she did excel in the last week coming up on the 8.51 arrival with Driver Domm on his last steam run. We sat in the eighth coach and as we approached Eastleigh there was a deafening clatter of cinders on the coach roof. A wonderful run of which I appear to have no log. Anyone help? ...

My greatest memory of '57' was on the list rites of the S & D when, paired with 34013, she joined in the last battle of Masbury Summit. I recall her coming round Bath Junction and then Biggin Hill storming up to Devonshire Tunnel with rockets going vertically into the sky. No-one had a post lunch nap in west Bath that late Sunday afternoon!

Here is Biggin Hill in more familiar territory taking water on the down road at Southampton Central.

I suspect many will guess the user here!

35023 became my favourite MN for various reasons which I can no doubt add as time goes by. Suffice to say 23 gave me my most exciting moment behind a steam loco (so far!!) when she swept up to 101 mph down from Hurstbourne through Andover on the DW Winkworth Special to Salisbury and Exeter on 15th October 1966. Also by a stroke of luck she gave me my last service steam run on the Southern on the last Saturday of steam in July 1967 on the up Channel ...

I always had a soft spot for No 10. In the last years she was so off beat her syncopated rhythm was quite unique. I had a number of runs with her on the 13.30d and have some recordings between Soton and Bomo evidencing her off beat nature. Instead of the usual 3 cyl beat there were three quiet beats, then silence and an exploding roar as the last three came in one go. I recall commenting you could hear the first 3, go down to the buffet for a coffee and come back for the last 3!!
