Painting Loco's

Post by 35005CP on Wed Jul 08, 2009 6:59 am

Hi all,

It seems these days that painting locos is done with a normal paint brush? Is this correct and what should be the right paint to use and how should it be applied?

Duncan, the main painter on the MHR uses the brush technique on the backhead of the Boiler before the cladding goes on and says this is how he applies the paint?

How was this done back in the steam days? He has apparently applied this technique to 60019 Bittern and there are alot of spots of the paint peeling, so hence my query?

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure, how this was done in BR days, but the painting was carried out at Eastleigh Works, in the paintshop.

But, cleaning of locos, cleaners used Oil and Parrafin in those days. I believe that they use different commercial cleaners these days, maybe that affects the paintwork?

The old method of Oil and Parafin is still used today to clean the locos.

My main concern is the way the paint is applied that is to be the issue with Bittern's pain peeling in certain areas? Or possibly the wrong kind of paint or not rubbed down properly after each coat is applied?

Thanks

Andy
