34067 - Tangmere Discussions

Post by 35005CP on Tue Sep 15, 2009 8:31 am

Hi all,

Does 34067 Tangmere still have this pump on the front just to the side of the Smokebox???
(I took this photo back in march 2006)

Thanks for all replies

Andy

Bit of an odd-ball place to have it situated don't you think Pete? Considering other mainline steam have them on the tender. Clanline has her concealed and out of view.

Andy
I take it that that's the air pump for use with air braked stock? I wondered what it was. It certainly seems an odd place to put it. Mind you having seen Tangmere at speed between Fleet and Farnborough recently it's not particularly noticeable.

Pete,

Yes that is the pump to use with Air-Braked Stock. Do you know how the repairs are going at Carnforth as she has been out of action for a while now? Obviously with "Ollie" taking over her tours.

Do you have a fotopic site with photos? Be good to seem some shots that you might have?

Any news on progress with Tangmere? All I am aware of to date is that they have found some bad cracking in the back corners of the firebox and also some on the thermic syphons. Now with Guardsman out of the way hopefully they will be cracking on with her (no pun intended).

I've heard 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' has some issues with her firebox and will be out of action for a while! So what is intended to take over Tangmere and 70013?

As for Tangmere this is all 'Hush, Hush' at the moment - I can't find anything out about 34067!!
I'm sure she is going for a major general overhaul - I'll eat my hat if she isn't!!

Tangmere's trips were being split between 70013 and 60019 so it could get interesting!

I would think that you are correct as whilst they fix what is already known to have been found wrong with the loco they will have time to overhaul the rest! It will be interesting to see if they try and do a "Riley" (i.e 14 week heavy general on his Black 5) which with a Bulleid will be no mean feat. Watch this space me thinks.............

I wonder if Tangmere will be ready for her run on the 17th December from Tonbridge to Oxford? Seems a strange place to start a steam engine these days?? Does anyone know if she will definately be doing that tour and if so what platform and time?
I will imagine she or whichever loco will be going via the Redhill Branch....

I'm sure everyone has seen and heard about the problems at the weekend with Tangmere with the Brake Issues? This seems to be a problem with the Air Pump for the Air-Braked stock as shown in this Video

Can anyone confirm that since this video was shot that the problems have been ironed out in readiness for the run on the 30th March on The Sussex Belle

Thanks in advance.

Well it seems as though the problems are still there with Tangmere. Who like I, feels that this was a rushed overhaul? There still appears to be the steam leak on the drivers side. Also the paint job from the front of the loco, doesn't look particularly great. And the nameplate hasn't been put back on.
34067 has been replaced by a Black 5 this coming Saturday on "The Cheshireman"

Is she due to go back up to Carnforth for more repairs etc????

Hi all,
I have been told of an icident last night with Tangmere. It's seems as though one of the Cylinders blew out on the ACE tour. Does anyone have any more information regarding the extent of the damage and more importantly how this happened?
This seems to be an ongoing issue with mainline steam failing more and more. Should they not have a preventative maintenance schedule etc......
Many Thanks

I understand it's now at Bishops Lydeard, and the problem is relatively serious, though no details. AFAIK Tangmere doesn't have a public website - their choice I guess.

I am not sure I agree with your comment about increasing numbers of failing. I think the number of mainline runs has increased this year, so more failures might be expected, but I'm not sure the failures-per-mile has increased.

Nick,
I have come across this photo of 34067 approaching the WSR on the WSR website.
It doesn't look as though the Cylinder has failed? Also it looks as though the loco went solo with no Diesel hauling it there? You probably know more about how Cylinders can fail more than I do. Any ideas?

A "cylinder failure" could be all sorts of things, some much worse than others - I saw the same photo. I don't often go to the WSR though I live quite near. I will certainly be going to their Autumn Gala when Manston is visiting. http://www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk/section.php?xSec=34&xPage=1

Thanks.

Apparently she is booked to go from Carnforth back to Southall tomorrow for Saturdays trip?? Has the Cracked Firebox issue been fixed? If so that was pretty darn quick work by all involved. As surely this would have been a major Strip-Down?
Thanks.

Re: 34067 - Tangmere Discussions

Post by 35005CP on Wed Nov 27, 2013 4:01 am

As people may or may not be aware Tangmere failed at the weekend. Here is the report;

This is how it happened and not speculation. I was there.
The Capital Christmas Nightmare 23/11/13
Report by Justin Foulger

In the morning 34067 "Tangmere" with 47580 on the back for ECS moves worked 1Z92 07:25 Weymouth to London Waterloo. The run had no problems and was on time however some were saying that she didn't sound right in some places. There was a strange clanking sound towards the front of the engine. This was also heard on the return leg.

On the return working 1Z94 17:48 London Waterloo to Weymouth, it passed Fleet on time at 18:44, 1 minute early. On the approach to Winchfield station for a water stop disaster struck. The right hand connecting rod became detached from the crosshead and fell onto the down fast line and hit the 3rd rail at the same time. The rod became ditched in the ballast. The 3rd rail was damaged on the down slow line.

The down slow and fast lines were soon blocked and the 3rd rail isolated. Tangmere came to a stand as the locomotives drive became disabled by this missing rod. South West Trains stopping services from Farnborough to Basingstoke calling at Fleet, Winchfield and Hook were affected all evening. Network Rail inspected the train and the track condition and they soon reopened the down fast line. This was around 20:00. Network Rail were still inspecting Tangmere's condition and what they were going to do next.

Around 21:00 a decision was made to lash up what's left on the damaged side and use 47580 to push the train to Basingstoke with Tangmere in light steam, where it will be terminated. The train will then return to Southall. Around 21:30 the disconnected rod was onboard the train. A further 2 minutes of work, one final line blockage was required and a final check to be made before it continues to Basingstoke. It would no longer take on water at Winchfield.

At 22:20 the train was requesting permission to move from Winchfield to Basingstoke. Permission was soon granted and 47580 pushed the train to Basingstoke passing Winchfield station at 22:21, 197 minutes late. It arrived into Basingstoke platform 2 at 22:36 where the train terminated. A South West Trains service to Weymouth was held at Basingstoke for the railtour passengers to board so they could get home. It was 1W85 2135 London Waterloo to Weymouth which made a special stop at Basingstoke and departed at 22:37, 19 minutes late.

The train was berthed in platform 2 from 22:36 to 23:21 while other services worked around it. A tail lamp was fitted to the front of Tangmere and the driver of the class 47 put his headlights on facing London. It left on time working 5Z94 2321 Basingstoke to Acton Lane Reception Sidings via Woking, Staines and Clapham Junction. Tangmere was in light steam and I believe it was able to run at normal line speed to Acton. It reached Acton Lane Reception Sidings at 01:14, 6 minutes late. It will go to Southall WCRC depot at a later stage.

The down slow line was closed between Farnborough and Basingstoke all night as the 3rd rail was damaged and has to be isolated. The 3rd rail was fixed overnight and normal service was resumed on Sunday morning.

With thanks to and sources from, UK steam info, Real Time Trains, members of the WRGEN Facebook page and Brett from SWT.

Here is a photo taken at the time the connecting rod hit the 3rd rail;

Hi all,

An Interesting Report well worth reading has been released by RAIB regarding the Incident with 34067 'Tangmere' last year when the connecting rod came off just outside Winchfield on the 23rd November 2013. Here is the link; http://www.raib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/140616_R132014_Winchfield.pdf

Cheers
