34073 249 Squadron

Post by 35012 on Mon May 03, 2010 9:18 am

Does anyone have news as to the current state of play with 34073 249 Squadron? Previously the loco's owner had it up for sale with huge a £1/4 million price tag.

This should help: http://wapedia.mobi/en/BR_Battle_of_Britain_class_34073_249_Squadron

It is still at the East Lanc railway awaiting a buyer with many key component parts missing.

Thanks for that. I knew Mr Hoskins had been interested but was not prepaired to pay the asking price!

IMHO, I don't think it is worth anywhere near the asking price because of the amount of parts that are missing from the loco. It will certainly need a new oil bath because this was donated to Tangmere.
Not sure if Jeremy Hoskins is looking for an alternative loco?

Rileys manufactured replacement parts for those taken for use on Tangmere and are part of the sale. I am inclined to agree with you re the price and would think that even £100,000 would be pushing it!

Mr Hoskins is still looking for another Bulleid, he had wanted an unrebuilt but is now thought to be looking for another rebuilt to compliment 34046 Braunton. That narrows the field somewhat!!

What parts has Riley's manufactured for 34073?

What other Bulleids could be a contender for Jeremy Hoskins? As in any that might be up for sale, or any that aren't currently being worked on? Could he possibly be looking at a Merchant Navy as well as another West Country Pacific?

Rileys made replacement parts for the items taken from 34073's sump.

It will be interesting to find out which Bulleids he is looking at, I would think that as he has passed on 249 Squadron that he is likely to be looking for something either complete or at least with a good inventory of parts!

Wasn't it only the Oil Bath that was taken from 34073? What condition is the boiler in? Pretty sure I remember something about it not being in great condition when I was at the MHR?

He could possibly approach the Avon Valley Railway on 35010 seeing as they haven't made much of a start!
There are of course others.
Does Jeremy Hoskins have a website dedicated to what he owns etc??

35010 is at the Colne Valley, the Avon Valley have 34058 Sir Frederick Pile.

Mr Hoskins did have a website but it currently appears to be defunct: http://www.londonsteam.org.uk/

249's boiler needs a lot of work but is a good candidate for restoration. The biggest issue is the lack of a tender.

Nowadays a Tender isn't a huge issue. The fact that only suitable wheelsets need to be found, which are normally bogies from a scrapped Diesel Loco.

Apologies for getting the wrong line with the wrong loco... But these 2 could be possible contenders for Mr Hoskins??? Where is he based out of? As his locos are scattered everywhere!

Southern loco's made a pattern for tender wheels and hve now made at least 2 batches of these (34058 has a set as an example).

Mr Hoskins is nominally based out of Southaul hence 60019 has now been moved there plus he also a loco managemant / operating company for Braunton.

Don't think Mr Hoskins will be interested in 35010 as he already has 2, it's a Light Pacific he's after..

Shall we make a list of Light Pacifics that Southern Locomotives don't own and those from others that aren't being already overhauled?

34105 - MHR (Currently in the queue for overhaul)
34016 - MHR - Ticket expired
34007 - Now main shareholder and running at the MHR
34023 - Owned by the Bulleid Society and home at the Bluebell
34027 - Overhaul in progress with the new cylinder currently in situe and is going to be based at the Severn Valley
34039 - Overhaul in progress on the GCR
34046 - On the WSR awaiting tender to be finished and fitting's to be done to go mainline.
34051 - Permenant fixture at the NRM
34058 - On the Avon Valley Railway - Not much updates recently - So I guess watch this space.
34059 - Owned by the Bulleid Society and home at the Bluebell
34067 - Running mainline and currently out of action
34073 - Has been said that Jeremy Hoskins made a bid for the loco - But not worth the 1/4 million that was asked by the owner.
34081 - Owned I think? by the BoB society? Home on the NNR
34092 - Owned and overhaul close to completion on KWVR
34101 - NYMR - No news yet as far as I can tell; so could be a contender for purchase?

I understand there are some other patterns and some castings around for Tender wheels/Bogies?

I can't believe 60019 has left the MHR - But I understand why it was done! Maybe Mr Hoskins can push for Braunton to stretch her legs out on the mainline?

You can never say - Only discuss options and updates that you hear! I don't have the answers; unless of course you know Jermy Hoskins and his plans?

34016 has been looked at. A couple of the guy's at the MHR were talking about it on Saturday (whoever looked at 34016 also wanted to look at another loco but it was in the shed so they could not).

I don't think we will go there with the Bunch Saga - But I feel the MHR are good competitors if that is the case as she could go mainline again; plus being used once again on the line. 34016 is always a favourite and since she was used as a steam tester at Eastleigh and being buggered etc. The fact the MHR have done a fantastic job in sorting out the issues shows that she belongs on the line.

But if plans are a-foot in Mr Hoskins buying her with all the things flying around, then I hope she does go mainline and lets the MHR use her on odd occasions? Maybe even the overhaul as you know the MHR do very well..

It could be a blessin'

I agree, lets hope that if the MHR don' get to keep her that Mr Hoskins does get the loco and puts her back on the mainline. What would be the icing on the cake would be for the work to be undertaken by the MHR and for the loco to be based there. OK there is a lot of stuff flying around at the moment and it is very difficult to seperate the wheat from the chaff but generally there isn't smoke without some sort of fire!

I completely agree! Every sentiment I agree with entirely - I think we are certainly on the same page! Mainline connection as you probably will know is a bonus - I think the fact is that Jeremy Hoskins would like all his locos in one place and one place only. Especially is he is based in the area to keep them near and keep em dear! (As the tale goes)

And who can blame him! If the MHRPS don't get Bodmin - I for one will be gutted; but I know how it has been with the shares etc.... And the fights etc. But Mr Hoskins knows how to do it and does it well! And hat off to him!

BTW, regarding to 34073. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BR_Battle_of_Britain_class_34073_249_Squadron

She is still showing as up for sale. And awaiting a buyer? But my question who owns the loco....

Primarily J.B. but I believe that the Mid Hants MAY also have a small shareholding.
