34009 Lyme Regis

Post by trent on Wed Sep 07, 2011 9:14 pm

I think it's because I associate this engine with happy family holidays at the location it was named after that I like it so much and would like to know more about it.

Was it a good steamer? Reliable? Was it always shedded at the Elms?

Would love to see some photos too if anyone has any?

Regards
Martin

I don't have a photo of it, though I saw it plenty of time in my youth. There are some photos on the web, e.g. http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/gb/steam/SR/WC-BB/rebuilt/34009-rs-7-7-65.jpg

Thanks Nick, that's a nice one. Photo looks to be dated July 1965 so that can't be far from the end.

When was 34009 withdrawn? The last SLL loco to be withdrawn was Sir Keith Park in October 1965, and the last operational photo in our collection was taken on 6th June 1965.

It's not the greatest photo, but nice to have.

I'm not sure exactly Nick, I have it down as July 1965 but would like some confirmation on that.

Some nice shots of SKP there.

The Bulleid Society website is a good source for such data, and states October 1966: http://www.bulleidsociety.org/OVS_Bulleid/OVSB_Light_Pacifics.html

Note the family resemblance between that website and SLL's. http://www.southern-locomotives.co.uk/ The design work for both was done by Richard Green of locos-in-profile fame. http://www.locos-in-profile.co.uk/

Thanks again Nick, some great links there.

In the last couple of days I won a nice b&w slide of 34009 from that well known auction site. When I get it I'll scan it and post it up here.
