Removal of nameplates

Post by trent on Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:52 pm

Hi guys

I was just looking through my folder of photos of loco's on shed at Nine Elms and I can't see any pattern related to a class or dates of nameplate removal.

Can anyone shed (no pun intended!) any more light on this? Questions I'm pondering the answer to include:

Why were the nameplates removed on some engines and not others?

When and why was the decision made to remove nameplates?

Given engines were in service without their namplates for some time what happened to the nameplates removed?

Thanks
Martin

Apparently some were welded on to prevent them being pinched.

Some were removed surreptitiously in the dead of night in Clapham carriage sidings. I'd love to know who now has the drivers side plate of 34001

Exactly. I guess they're all out there somewhere!

I don't think I've ever seen a list published of nameplates that are known and on view. Anyone have one?

To the best of my knowledge no such list exists. Some plates sold at auction are bought anonymously - for some reason - though I cannot image why - unless it is to avoid\evade scrutiny by anyone. It would be an interesting topic to research - if anyone had the time or inclination to do so.

Out of interest, anyone know when the last plate came up for sale (MN/WC or BoB) and how much it went for?

A quick search has uncovered the sale of 34020 Seaton. The nameplate sold for 20k. The link is here;
