Visits to Fratton MPD 1964 and 1965

Post by BB34057 on Sat Jun 22, 2013 11:32 am

Following my visits during 1963 the next time I got to visit Fratton MPD was on Saturday 18th April 1964 when the depot was open for those booked on the 'Hampshire Venturer' rail tour which was starting in the morning from Portsmouth. The rail tour took in Eastleigh Works and MPD, Romsey, Andover, Salisbury MPD, Poole (via Downton), Hamworthy Goods line/station, finishing as Southampton Central (via Ringwood). The train consisted of 6 corridor coaches and train loco Q class 30548. At Eastleigh the train was worked into the works yard by USA tank loco 30073.

Inside Fratton shed and set aside for possible preservation were:
V 30925, 30926. M7 30245. Z 30952. Q 30538 and preserved T9 120.

For the occasion LN 30850 and N15 30777 normally kept inside had been moved outside and into the yard at the front of the shed and outside at the rear of the shed was 0298 class 30587.

Locos noted outside the shed were:
BB 34066. U 31618, 31625, 31638, 31799, 31806. N 31408, 31819, Q1 33022, 33034. Q 30548. Standards 76012, 76033, 76059, 76064, 76067.

Including Fratton MPD the number of locos recorded during railtour was 155 steam, 16 diesel and 3 electric.

This was my only visit to Fratton MPD during 1964, however when passing the shed on a train into Fratton station on my way to Reading on 13th June and 31 July, I recorded seeing Standards 73117, 75079, 76010, 76014, 80010, 80082, 80150 in the shed yard.

I paid a visit to the shed in the spring of 1965 and my only recollection was seeing M7 30133 inside the shed along with a spare steam coaling crane. All the stored for preservation locos had gone and three quarters of the shed roof had been removed apart from the area by the offices where the shed roads were still covered.

My final visit the Fratton MPD was on Sunday 8th August 1965.

Outside in the shed yard in steam were:
WC 34017. Standards 76033, 80139 and 75070 coupled to M7 30133 which was ready to be towed away to meet its fate.

Inside the roundhouse on one of the roads by the office and under the remaining roof was Standard 76012, which was under repair with the right hand side valve gear removed and receiving attention.

Finally the last time I passed the depot during steam days was on 1st July 1967 when in the yard was 'Peak' D120. Standards 73065, 75077 and six Standards I couldn't identify.

I've been scanning negatives today and one of these was of 30587 at the rear of Fratton shed taken on 18th April 1964. Clearly visible in the background is the engine hoist still in position. In my previous posts I had mentioned that this had been demolished when I visited on this date. Well it's 50 years ago and my memory was one year out, it had in fact been demolished by the time I made my first visit in 1965.

I have edited out this incorrect information from the two posts concerned.
