Fratton Loco-L1 31757!

Post by 34017 Ilfracombe on Sun Jun 07, 2009 4:17 pm

Remembering the 1950s, and early 1960s. One locomotive permanently stored here, was an L1 class loco number 31757. Whatever happened to that loco, and where was she scrapped?

It does state being a Nine Elms loco though - Unfortunatly I can't find anything on 31757 at Fratton. The closest I can find is her being stored in Fratton Roundhouse for many years....
Did you ever drive/fire this class of loco (4-4-0)?

No many were withdrawn in the 50s. I can remember 31757 being in the Roundhouse for years, and Im not sure that link you posted is accurate, regarding this Loco

Did anyone know that the L1 class were nicknamed "Cement Mixers"? Apparently because they rode like it.... Laughing

Also in 'The Railway Magazine' dated December 2011 it states the following (Under Locomotives that died in captivity) "With reference to engines stored in Fratton roundhouse, I enclose a photograph of another – L1 No. 31757 (pictured right). It was present on August 31, 1962 with No. 30777 Sir Lamiel.

I asked a passing railwayman if he knew why they were there and he said that they were “both for preservation”.

Withdrawn in December 1961, No. 31757 was finally cut up at Eastleigh in March 1963, by which time it had become the last surviving Maunsell L1. It is difficult to imagine that it had not been put aside for preservation"
