Clive Groome

Post by 35005CP on Wed Jun 17, 2009 6:42 am

Hi all,

If anyone has seen the railway children (film) there is a shot of Clive Groome (Driver) on the footplate braking the loco very hard!

I've seen many footage of Clive and many interviews and has even produced many DVD's dedicated to steam! Such a fantastic chap!!!

Do any other people know him? He has certainly shot to fame as an ex-engineman - Turned Superstar!!

Thanks

Andy

Hi, Andy,

Fired for Clive, he used to be known as 'the sergeant major' - white shirt, black tie, clean blues, shiny boots, the whole nine yards. I also met up with him several times during the 80s & 90s at the Bluebell and at the NRM - we have both delivered papers at seminars at the museum and we have both published books on the nature of footplate work. When Clive began his Footplate Days course at the Bluebell I went down to for a special trip for the people who'd been involved and a birthday treat for Bert Hooker - who I also fired for.

Hi Dave,

If you haven't seen Clive in recent years; you will notice that he hasn't changed at all!
I remember a few years ago when I saw him, he tried to get me firing on the Bluebell.

Does anyone know if he is still driving on the Bluebell? It's a family affair these days as 2 of his Daughters are firing now.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy, I have met Clive's lovely daughters - had a run with Clive and one of them from S/park to kingscote with 'Stepney'. I think Clive still does his footplate days course but down at the Lavender Line - Isfield. I haven't seen him for about 5 or six years now so I don't know if he's still doing any driving.

I remember well my first firing turn at Nine Elms, and it was on the Breakdown Crane in Nine Elms Goods Yard; with Clive. First time, that I had met him, and he imformed me; that he was going to get some Grub in the Yards "Cafe". He told me not to move the engine, and tell anyone whom came by to **** off". 5 minutes went by, and a chap in a suit came up, and ordered me to move the engine. **** off, I said; and off he went.

Clive returned to the engine some 15 minutes later, and was confronted by the gentleman in suit. He told Clive what I said, and he praised me to Clive, what I said.

It was Stan Downs, Motive Power Superintendant! Shocked

Too right - If a driver tells you not to move a loco under any circumstances - Then you DO NOT move that loco!

But I have to say Clive is a legend for anyone who has seen him on the railway Children and educating people on steam on the Bluebell and his whole being in fact!!!

Appears to be a very regimental guy - But that is is whole being..... Smile

But, I am sure Blue Funnel remembers Clive towards the late 60s, and his change of appearance? Well for a short time anyway! Laughing
