Post by 35005CP on Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:13 am

Hi all,

Has anyone seen this photoshoot of 34070 Manston in Eastleigh yard after her work on her bogie overhaul? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JS-IsjbbKQ

Thanks

Andy

So when is she due to leave? Surely the tests and running in have been completed? Might be worth finding out which date she is due to leave, as she could possibly be in steam that day.....

34070 has been doing some corporate driver experience for Eastleigh Works members. There is no set date still to return to Swanage currently as there is still some Cylinder Lubrication issues to be resolved.

Thanks

Andy

Hi all,

I have been asked by a member of the forum if this is a picture of 34070 - Manston taken in June 1959?? Any help would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Andy

The photo looks familiar - has it been published somewhere? The train is the Night Ferry, probably the Up train as it's in daylight, somewhere in north Kent as the tracks are electrified. The Bulleid is a BoB (crest shape) and has a shortish nameplate. The tender is cut down, which Manston certainly had by the time it moved to Exmouth Junction, but I have no other photos of Manston dated 1959. How do we know the photo was taken in 1959? My guess is it could be Manston but it's not possible to be sure.

Nick,

35005CP posted the photo on my behalf as I do not have the wherewithal to post it up myself. The settings on our work computers will not allow it, and being the Luddite I am, I don't have a PC/laptop at home.

An old schoolchum of mine sent the pic to me, thinking that it may well be Manston hauling "The Night Ferry". I've only ever seen pics of Manston with the 4,500 gal. high sided tender attached, so I'm not sure whether the "BoB" in the pic is 34070 or not.

I sent the pic on to some knowledgeable chaps to see what transpired. I received the following reply from Don Benn:-

"As this is 1959 the it could well be Manston. It carried a high sided tender 3318 from 1956. Only 3 high sided 4500 gall tenders were cut down prior to 1958 when all remaining 4500 gall tenders on the unmodified pacifics were cut down except those attached to 34069, 34072, 34074, 34075 and 34078. So I think there is a very good chance this is Manston, taken a favourite train spotting location in the days of steam. We would walk there from home in Bromley."

Shortly after, Don added:-

"I have now found photos of Manston in 1960-1962 with a high sided tender so that puts doubt on it being Manston unless it swapped tenders for a while in 1959.The other option would be Kenley though this was a Stew Lane engine and Manston was Dover and I think Dover provided the train engine for the up Night Ferry. Or was it the engine off the down train in which case it's not Manston but probably Kenley."

My old schoolchum informs me that Manston arrived at Barry Island with a cut down tender. He also has a picture that he took of Manston arriving on a lowloader at Richborough from Barry Island in May 1983. I have forwarded this pic, amongst others to 35005CP, who, I am sure, if asked nicely, will post it here for perusal.

As you may have gathered I look after the photo archive for Southern Locomotives, the owners of Manston. Here's our collection of Manston photos:

https://picasaweb.google.com/116839141471298057728/34070Manston#

Not all have dates, though those we have of Manston on the western section all show it with a cut down tender.

If anyone has photos of Manston that they will let us add to our archive we would love to receive a copy - please email to nicksidmouth@gmail.com with whatever details are available. Naturally we will acknowledge copyright.

Nick,

Thanks for posting up the link - a very interesting pictorial "potted history".

Reading through Mr Cook's account of cycling to the naming ceremony at Ramsgate Station, he mentions someone called David Hume - with whom I used to work at the Ramsgate branch of Nat West in the 1970s!

WHHOOoooosssshhhh!!! "What was that?"

"That was you life flashing by, Fawlty!".

I've certainly got an old b/w pic of Manston sent to me by Colin Price. I'm sure that he won't mind it being added to the Web Album. I'll have a look for it and send it on.

My mistake - I've found the pic and it was Don Benn who took it.
