This Week's Highlights
Pub Groups Want Your Money
By John Harrington, ShareCast Journalist

Having tried and failed to break through the 4,500 barrier throughout May and the first half of June, the Footsie moved into reverse this week. Depending on your viewpoint, the market is either taking a pause for breath as profit-takers count their money, or it is the end of the sucker’s rally.

Supermarket sweep

Recession or not, people still have to eat, and this week two giants of the supermarket sector issued trading updates. Once again the reigning champion, Tesco, saw its growth rate overshadowed by J. Sainsbury, the company it knocked off the top of the tree in 1995.

Tesco's first quarter trading update was, nevertheless, well received. Like-for-like (LFL) sales growth came in at the top end of expectations, helped by a resumption of growth in non-food sales. Excluding petrol and VAT, UK LFL sales in the 13 weeks to the end of May rose 4.3% from a year earlier. Analysts predicted 3.5% to 4.3%. (Read more: Tesco LFL sales at top end of expectations)

Reaction to Sainsbury’s trading update was less enthusiastic, largely because the supermarket chain is planning to raise £445m via a placing and offering of convertible bonds to speed up growth and take advantage of the weak property market. In a separate statement, the retailer reported a 7.8% hike in like-for-like sales excluding fuel and VAT for the 12 weeks to 13 June. (Read more: Sainsbury prices placing at 310p)

Called to the bar: it’s your round
